Washington | Paid Sick Leave Expansion
Effective January 1, 2025, employees will be able to use their Washington paid sick leave (PSL) when a local, state, or federal emergency is declared, which is not a current “use” or reason why employees may use their PSL.
Additionally, any individual who regularly resides in the employee’s home, or where their relationship creates an expectation that the employee care for them and they depend on the employee for care, will be considered a family member. As a result, employees may use PSL to care for the individual if they need it because of illness, injury, or health condition, or they need a medical diagnosis or preventative medical care. However, this expanded definition of “family member” won’t include someone who simply lives in the same home as the employee with no expectation that the employee care for them.
