Captive Audience Prohibition Act
Hawaii recently passed the Captive Audience Prohibition Act, which prohibits employers from discharging, disciplining, or otherwise penalizing or threatening any adverse employment action against an employee because s/he declines to either: (1) attend or participate in an employer-sponsored meeting that communicates the opinion of the employer about political matters; or (2) receive or listed to a communication from the employer that communicates the opinion of the employer about political matters. Political matters include an employee’s decision to support or join a labor union. The law was effective July 2, 2024.
